DocTabs never touches what’s inside your files. Here is what the app and this website use, and why, in plain words.

DocTabs uses only the names and locations of your open files. It never opens what’s inside.

This website uses no cookies and never follows you across other sites.
Your files
To show your open files as tabs, DocTabs uses macOS Automation to ask Word, Excel and PowerPoint for just two things:
- The name of each open file
- Where that file is saved
DocTabs uses these only to tell apart files with the same name, bring the right window forward, close a file from its tab and show it in Finder. Everything happens on your Mac: DocTabs never opens, reads, changes or uploads your files, and never sends their names or locations anywhere.
Anonymous usage signal
Once a day, DocTabs sends a single anonymous “active” signal so we can count how many people use the app. It contains only these four things:
- A random install ID that is not linked to you
- The app version
- The macOS version
- The app language
File names, file contents and personal information are never included. The signal is processed by PostHog in the United States. Location lookup from your IP address is turned off and IP addresses are not stored.
You can turn the signal off at any time: click the DocTabs icon in the menu bar and choose Settings → Share Anonymous Usage Data.
Update checks
DocTabs checks for new versions using a small file on GitHub, and downloads updates from there too. Like any web request, this lets GitHub see your IP address. We never receive it.
You can turn off automatic checks in Settings → Check for Updates Automatically.
Settings
Your settings, such as the language and the bar position, are stored only on your Mac. DocTabs has no accounts and never asks for your name, email or password.
This website
This website does not use cookies. To count visits, it uses two privacy-focused analytics services, Umami and Vercel Web Analytics, which record only these anonymous details:
- Which page was opened
- Which site you came from
- Your country
- Your device type
Neither service identifies you or follows you across other sites. Your light or dark mode choice is kept in your browser’s local storage and stays on your device.
When you download DocTabs, the file comes from GitHub. The server that hosts this site may also keep standard access logs, such as IP address and browser type, for security.
